Avril Elizabeth Home was inspired by a little girl named Avril Elizabeth, whose life touched the hearts of everyone around her. Although her time was brief, the love she inspired became the foundation for something far greater than anyone could have imagined.

From that vision, Avril Elizabeth Home was born. For decades, our Home has provided lifelong care, friendship and belonging to generations of residents. Sheila Suttner
When Sheila Suttner met families searching for a safe, loving and lifelong home for their loved ones with intellectual disabilities, she recognised a gap that could not be ignored. Too many families faced uncertainty about what the future would hold and struggled to find a place
where their loved ones would be cared for with dignity, respect and genuine affection.

Rather than accepting that reality, Sheila chose to create something different.

Guided by compassion, determination and an unwavering belief in the value of every human
life, she founded Avril Elizabeth Home as a place where adults with intellectual disabilities
could belong - not just for a season, but for a lifetime.

From the very beginning, Sheila envisioned more than a residential home. She dreamed of a family. A place filled with friendship, laughter, opportunity and purpose. A place where every resident would be known by name, celebrated for their individuality and surrounded by people who genuinely cared.

That vision continues to shape Avril Elizabeth Home today.

Every welcoming smile, every shared meal, every celebration, every act of kindness and every friendship formed within our Home reflects the values Sheila believed in from the very beginning.

The Teddy That Kept The Hope Alive
Sometimes, hope arrives in the smallest hands.

There was a time when Avril Elizabeth Home faced one of its greatest challenges. Like many charities, the future of the Home was uncertain,
and the dream of providing lifelong care for our residents was under immense pressure. But, our community refused to let hope fade.
​
Instead, people from every walk of life came together around a simple idea — a teddy bear.
​
Each teddy bear became more than a handcrafted gift. It became a symbol of love, compassion and the belief that every resident deserved a safe place to call home. Families, friends, businesses and supporters embraced the campaign, sharing its story and giving generously to help protect the future of Avril Elizabeth Home.

One teddy bear became hundreds.
Hundreds of teddy bears became a movement.
And that movement helped secure the future of our Home.
​
Today, the teddy bear remains a treasured symbol of what is possible when a community unites behind a shared purpose. It reminds us that lasting change is not always created through grand gestures, but through many acts of kindness woven together with hope.

Every resident who laughs with friends, enjoys a shared meal, tends the garden, creates beautiful artwork or celebrates another birthday is
part of the legacy those teddy bears helped protect.

The Home still stands today because people chose compassion over indifference, generosity over hesitation, and hope over uncertainty.

The teddy bear did more than raise funds - it became a reminder that love, when shared by a community, has the power to build a future.
